Years after the global pandemic was declared over, Nigeria has recorded a significant fresh case of COVID-19 in Cross River State, prompting immediate health interventions and contact tracing. The Cross River State Commissioner for Health, Henry Ayuk, confirmed the development in Calabar on Tuesday, identifying the patient as a Chinese national. The individual reportedly arrived in Nigeria on March 17, 2026, and began showing symptoms on April 10, suggesting the virus was contracted within the country. Health authorities have since mobilized teams to Akamkpa Local Government Area, where the patient lived and worked, to conduct extensive profiling and tracing of all contacts. Commissioner Ayuk assured the public that the state has the capacity to curb the spread and urged residents to remain calm but vigilant. The World Health Organization (WHO) coordinator in the state, Yewande Olatunde, reiterated that while the global emergency has passed, the virus has not been fully eradicated. Olatunde warned that new strains continue to develop and encouraged Nigerians to maintain high health consciousness and adhere to public health guidelines. This case marks the first major report of the virus in Cross River since 2022. Nationwide, COVID-19 has claimed roughly 3,000 lives since it first reached Nigeria in 2020. Local health officials emphasized that surveillance systems remain active to prevent any potential local outbreak of the SARS variant.
