The Nigeria Police Force has pulled the curtain on a massive $550,000 fraud scheme following the arrest of one Emwanta Eghosa Smith. This major bust, which was confirmed by the police in a statement released on March 31, 2026, highlights a sophisticated operation involving identity theft and international money laundering.

The trouble started when an American woman cried out after being swindled out of over half a million dollars between October 2025 and January 2026. The victim revealed that she fell for a series of online dealings with someone she believed to be a credible figure. Moving swiftly, operatives from the INTERPOL National Central Bureau in Abuja launched a manhunt that led them straight to the heart of Benin City, Edo State. After a tactical four-day operation that ended on March 26, Smith was finally cornered and taken into custody.

Preliminary investigations have exposed the suspect’s alleged “playbook,” which involved impersonating top government officials and high-profile personalities to win the victim’s trust. Once the bond was established, he reportedly convinced her to move the massive sum through various cryptocurrency platforms.

The suspect wasn’t just sitting on the cash, as police discovered that the proceeds were allegedly used to fund a luxury lifestyle. During the raid, authorities recovered five vehicles and an uncompleted building in Benin City, all believed to be bought with the fraudulent funds. To make matters worse, officers also found $10,000 in counterfeit cash in his possession.

Reacting to the successful sting, Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu made it clear that the Force is turning up the heat on cybercriminals. He emphasized that the Nigeria Police Force is tightening its grip through international collaborations to ensure there is no hiding place for fraudsters. The IG also sent a strong warning to the public to stay “woke” during online interactions and to double-check any financial requests before hitting the send button.
