The Federal Government has successfully brought home 1,230 Nigerians who were stranded in the Republic of Niger. This massive humanitarian rescue, led by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, saw the returnees arrive in two separate batches through the month of March.

In a statement released in Abuja on Wednesday by the ministry’s spokesperson, Kimiebi Imomotimi Ebienfa, it was revealed that the first group of 708 Nigerians touched down on March 23, 2026, followed shortly by a second group of 522 on March 29. The ministry tagged the operation as a clear signal of the government’s resolve to protect the dignity and welfare of Nigerians, no matter where they are in the world.

This successful mission was made possible through a strategic partnership with the International Organization for Migration (IOM), which provided the essential logistical and technical muscle to ensure everything went off without a hitch. The ministry noted that this collaboration highlights Nigeria’s commitment to working with global bodies to handle migration issues in a humane and orderly way.

Upon their arrival in Kano, the returnees were greeted by a heavy-duty team of officials from various agencies, including the National Commission for Refugees, Migrants, and Internally Displaced Persons (NCFRMI), NEMA, the Nigeria Immigration Service, NAPTIP, and the NSCDC. Other key players on the ground included the International Committee of the Red Cross, the Nigeria Police, the DSS, and representatives from the Kano and Katsina State governments.

The reception was a textbook example of inter-agency teamwork. After being profiled at the airport, the evacuees were moved to the Immigration Training School in Kano. There, they were given a place to stay, hot meals, medical check-ups, and basic supplies before finally being cleared to reunite with their families.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs took the opportunity to thank the government of Niger Republic for its cooperation, noting that the smooth process has further strengthened the bond between the two nations. While the government continues to monitor the regional situation to keep its citizens safe, it has also sent out a strong advisory to Nigerians abroad: stay law-abiding, keep in touch with the nearest diplomatic missions, and make sure to register with the embassy so help can reach them quickly in times of trouble.
