The Federal Government has commenced the release of funds and administrative processing for the evacuation of Nigerian nationals stranded in the Middle East following heightened regional hostilities.

This update was disclosed by a spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ebienfa, who confirmed that the government is prioritizing citizens in high-risk zones, particularly Iran and Israel.

The ministry noted that evacuating Nigerians from Iran presents “significant logistical challenges.” The current plan involves:

  • Moving stranded students from various universities to the Armenian border.
  • Negotiating entry conditions with Armenian authorities for safe passage.
  • Considering the deployment of Nigerian Air Force aircraft, pending security clearances in the volatile airspace.

There is a sigh of relief for Nigerians stranded in Qatar. Following the resumption of Qatar Airways flights to Lagos on Monday, officials expect all transit passengers affected by flight disruptions to be back in the country within days. Similar movements have been recorded via Cairo and Nairobi.

The evacuation efforts come on the heels of a massive escalation. The UAE Ministry of Defence reported intercepting hundreds of missiles and drones launched from Iran.

While the attacks resulted in several deaths and over 140 injuries among foreign workers, the ministry confirmed that the only Nigerian reported injured in the hostilities has been treated and discharged.

Amid the tension, the Iranian Ambassador to Nigeria, Gholamreza Raja, has expressed Tehran’s readiness to assist. He stated that the Iranian government is willing to cooperate with Nigerian authorities to facilitate the safe departure of those who wish to leave.
