President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to democratic principles, declaring himself a “die-hard democrat” dedicated to defending Nigeria’s democratic system and the rule of law.

The President made these remarks on Wednesday during a meeting with leaders of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and members of the Inter-Party Advisory Council (IPAC) at the State House in Abuja.

Reflecting on Nigeria’s political journey over the last 26 years, Tinubu noted that the nation’s democracy has been sustained through the selfless sacrifices and voluntary commitment of political actors across various party lines.

Addressing the gathering of political stakeholders, the President stressed that his personal conviction in the democratic process remains unshakable.

Tinubu stated:

“I am a die-hard democrat and I follow that belief wholeheartedly, committed to a united country, Nigeria. That principle and philosophy will live and die with me.”

He emphasized that while he remains a committed member of the APC, he respects the multi-party nature of the country and the rights of others to belong to different platforms.

The President further highlighted the importance of resolving political disagreements through dialogue and intellectual debate rather than resorting to threats or intimidation.

According to him, the beauty of the system lies in the balance between the majority and the minority.

“The rule of law must prevail before any democrat. The majority will have their say and their way, and the minority will have their say and might not have their way. That is the sweetness and essence of democracy,” he added.

Recalling his own political history, President Tinubu reminded the audience that he had spent years in the opposition during times when political circumstances were unfavorable.

He noted that even during those challenging periods, he remained disciplined and never resorted to threats against the state, except when challenging the former military junta.

The President concluded by urging all political leaders to prioritize peace, stability, and democratic values to ensure the continued progress of the nation.
