A weekend that started with hope turned into a nightmare at the New Castle Bus Stop along the Oworonsoki-Apapa Expressway. What was meant to be a routine trip for passengers of a Volkswagen commercial bus became a scene of absolute horror, leaving one woman dead and six others fighting for their lives with multiple fractures.

In a split second, the expressway turned into a danger zone, proving once again how unpredictable Lagos roads can be.

The disaster began when a Volkswagen bus (Reg No: LSD 654 XY) suddenly lost control and slammed into a roadside culvert. The impact was so violent that a female passenger was launched out of the vehicle and onto the cold asphalt of the expressway.

Before anyone could scream for help, tragedy struck a second time. An oncoming articulated trailer, unable to stop in time, ran over the fallen passenger, killing her instantly. In a move that has sparked outrage, the trailer driver reportedly sped off, leaving a trail of blood and chaos behind.

While the unidentified woman lost her life, six other occupants—including the bus driver—were not spared. According to reports from LASTMA, the victims sustained severe injuries, with the driver reportedly suffering a fractured leg.

The Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS) raced to the scene, whisking the survivors to a nearby hospital, while the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit (SEHMU) had the heartbreaking task of removing the remains of the deceased.

To prevent a massive pile-up, LASTMA officials and officers from the Pedro Police Division temporarily shut down the expressway. The closure allowed emergency responders to evacuate the victims and tow away the wrecked bus. After hours of intense work, the debris was cleared, and the “go-slow” finally began to ease.

Reacting to the tragedy, LASTMA General Manager Olalekan Bakare-Oki expressed deep condolences to the family of the deceased but didn’t mince words about the cause. He reminded all motorists that proper vehicle maintenance isn’t just a suggestion—it’s a life-saving necessity.
