A fragile peace pact meant to protect the holy month of Ramadan has been torn to shreds. In a cold-blooded betrayal that has left the Kankara Local Government Area in mourning, armed bandits launched a series of fresh attacks, leaving one resident dead and several others—including a religious leader—vanished into the forest.

The attacks come just as residents were beginning to breathe a sigh of relief following a highly publicized “peace deal” struck between local stakeholders and the armed groups.

The terror unfolded in two waves, striking at the very heart of the community’s spiritual life

The bloodletting has sent a wave of shock and “heightened fear” through Katsina State. Security analyst and crisis journalist, Bakatsine, who first broke the news on Friday, highlighted the grim reality: The bandits have no respect for the sacred.

Despite the pre-Ramadan agreement intended to ensure a month of worship without bloodshed, the gunmen have signaled that the “peace” was nothing more than a tactical pause.

“We thought the deal would hold for the Holy Month,” one terrified resident whispered. “But now, even the way to the mosque isn’t safe.”

With an Imam in captivity and a community in hiding, calls are mounting for the security forces to move beyond “agreements” and deploy “stronger measures” to flush out the killers. As the Ramadan fast continues, the people of Kankara are now breaking their bread with a side of terror, wondering who will be the next to vanish before the dawn.

Will the government respond with force, or is the “Peace Deal” era officially dead?
