ABUJA, NIGERIA — The Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) has issued an urgent “Peak Season” advisory following a spike in Lassa fever cases. As of February 2026, the outbreak has taken a grim turn, claiming the lives of two healthcare workers and infecting 13 others. If you reside in or are traveling to these high-burden hotspots, the NCDC urges maximum caution: Edo & Ondo Bauchi & Taraba Ebonyi & Benue The Symptoms: It’s Not Always Malaria One of the biggest risks is the “six-day delay” in seeking help because symptoms mimic common fever. Watch for: High fever and general body weakness. Sore throat, cough, or diarrhea. Danger Sign: Unexplained bleeding from the nose, mouth, or ears. Your 3-Step Protection Plan Rat-Proof Your Kitchen: Store all grains (Garri, rice, flour) in tightly sealed plastic or metal containers. Never dry food on the floor outside. Block the Entries: Seal holes in walls and keep dustbins covered. If there’s no food or shelter, the “multimammate rat” won’t stay. Stop Self-Medicating: If a fever persists, do not visit a chemist for a “mix.” Contact your local health officer or the NCDC toll-free line at 6232. Note to Medics: The NCDC warns against a “low index of suspicion.” Treat every fever in the general ward with standard precautions—your safety is the priority. Post navigation The Death of the Giant?
