LAGOS – The police on Monday hauled two men, Agbo Agbonopo, 20, and Salisu Abubakar, 25, before a Badagry Chief Magistrates’ Court for allegedly stealing a bag of rice at the Seme border.

The defendants, whose residential addresses were not provided to the court, are facing a two-count charge of conspiracy and stealing.

The Police Prosecutor, Edet Ekpo, informed the court that the incident occurred on February 2, at approximately 2:30 p.m. in the Gbaji area, a notorious commercial hub near the Seme border in Badagry.

According to the prosecution, the duo conspired to steal one bag of rice, valued at N58,000, belonging to one Francis Adeyemi.

The court heard that the defendants were intercepted while allegedly making frantic efforts to sell the stolen food item to unsuspecting buyers. They were subsequently apprehended and handed over to the police for further investigation and prosecution.

When the charges were read to them, both Agbonopo and Abubakar pleaded not guilty.

The offences, according to the prosecutor, contravene the provisions of Sections 411 and 287 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015

Delivering his ruling on the bail application, the Chief Magistrate, Nurudeen Layeni, granted the defendants bail in the sum of N500,000 each, with two sureties in like sum.
