A wave of outrage has swept through Owerri as the Imo State Government officially moves to ensure that 38-year-old businesswoman, Juliet Igwe, faces the full weight of the law for the unspeakable torture of her five-year-old maid.

In a courtroom session that left many in tears, details emerged of the “house of horrors” the young victim endured before being rescued.

The suspect, Juliet Igwe, is accused of committing atrocities that defy human logic. According to court filings and activists, the minor was subjected to:

  • Severe Burns: Her private parts were burnt, and her body was scalded with hot candle wax.
  • Boiling Water Torture: Both of the child’s hands were immersed in boiling water.
  • Permanent Disability: Tragically, the five-year-old has already lost three fingers due to the severity of the injuries.

The case, which was initially brought before Chief Magistrate B.U. Adikaibe, took a major turn on Thursday. The State Ministry of Justice, represented by Fidelis Igbo, announced that formal charges have now been filed at the High Court in Owerri.

Because the crime carries a potential penalty of life imprisonment, the Magistrate court struck out the matter for lack of jurisdiction, clearing the way for a high-stakes trial set to begin on February 26, 2026.

The minor’s rescue was made possible by the Stand For Humanity Foundation, led by journalist and activist Chidiebube Okeoma. Okeoma, who produced the child in court, assured the public that his organization is working hand-in-hand with the state to ensure the girl’s total recovery and legal victory.

The case has reached the highest levels of the state. The Wife of the Governor, H.E. Chioma Uzodinma, visited the minor at the hospital on Wednesday. She has personally assured Nigerians that the victim will be fully rehabilitated and that justice will not just be served, but dispensed swiftly.

The suspect remains remanded in the Owerri Correctional Centre. We will be following this case closely until February 26.
