OYO — The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Engineer Abimbola Akeem Owoade I, has openly faulted the Oyo State Governor, Seyi Makinde, regarding the newly announced rotational chairmanship arrangement for the Oyo State Council of Obas and Chiefs.

The monarch described as “incorrect” the governor’s claim that he was duly consulted before the decision was taken to appoint the Olubadan of Ibadanland as the pioneer chairman under the new arrangement.

The Alaafin made his position known in a statement issued on Thursday by his Director of Media and Publicity, Mr. Bode Durojaiye, reacting to the inauguration of the reconstituted council.

Governor Makinde had, on Thursday, while inaugurating the council at the Executive Council Chambers in Ibadan, announced that the chairmanship would henceforth rotate among the Alaafin of Oyo, the Olubadan of Ibadanland, and the Soun of Ogbomoso.

To kickstart the new arrangement, the governor announced the Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, as the pioneer chairman.

During the event, Makinde maintained that the decision was a product of consultations with the three foremost traditional rulers in the state to ensure unity and harmony.

However, the Alaafin has swiftly disputed this claim, insisting that he was not carried along in the decision-making process that led to the rotational arrangement.

The development has sparked fresh conversations regarding the implementation of the amended Chieftaincy Law, which provides the legal framework for the rotational leadership, following the revival of the Council after over a decade of inactivity.

The statement read in part, “The claim by the Governor that he consulted with the Alaafin before the announcement is incorrect. The Alaafin was not part of any meeting where such a decision was reached.”

The disagreement signals early friction in the newly reconstituted body, which the state government had hoped would foster cohesion among the traditional institutions in the state.
