It is a parent’s worst nightmare: a phone call claiming your daughter has been snatched, followed by a demand for millions. But for one family in Anambra, the nightmare wasn’t caused by hardened criminals—it was orchestrated from within by their own child. The Anambra State Police Command has blown the lid off a cold-blooded conspiracy involving 18-year-old Mmesoma Ifediora and her boyfriend, Obiora Okoye (notoriously known as “Stainless”). Their goal? A ₦3 million payday at the expense of her parents’ tears. This wasn’t a heat-of-the-moment mistake. For two solid months, Mmesoma and “Stainless” lived a double life. They moved from one hideout to another, eventually settling in the “Malaysia Forest” in Awkuzu to keep the charade going. To make the “kidnapping” look real, they didn’t hold back on the theatrics. When Police detectives from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Awkuzu, finally stormed their camp on March 14, they found a toolkit of deception: The plot was thick. Mmesoma confessed to the Police that she and her boyfriend had taken a “vow of secrecy” over a native “juju” calabash to ensure neither of them would snitch. The scam was actually working. Heartbroken and desperate to save their daughter, her parents had already scraped together and paid ₦240,000 into Mmesoma’s own OPay account as a down payment on the ₦3 million ransom When the law finally caught up with them, the “Romeo” of the story proved he wasn’t so romantic. Upon sighting the Police, Obiora “Stainless” Okoye abandoned his teenage lover and fled into the thick forest. He is currently a wanted man. Mmesoma, however, wasn’t so lucky. She was “rescued” only to be arrested alongside two other accomplices, Chinedu Nwobi and Okwudili Nweke, both 25, who were allegedly part of the conspiracy.
